It is important to find out how batteries can help smooth out power peaks, stabilize the power grid and increase the utilization of existing grids to avoid grid investments that would otherwise be necessary to cover the power peaks. The batteries will contribute to a balance between consumption and production in the central grid.

The major area of use on Utsira will be to use batteries as an alternative to expanding and strengthening the local power grid when the scheduled boat MS Utsira is to be electrified. When the liner is to charge, the batteries can deliver power very quickly.
