Agriculture

The farmers at Utsira focus on local food production, take care of our local food traditions, and ensure that the island's unique cultural landscape does not grow again.

Through innovation and investment in organic production, they contribute to the development of society and ensure the conservation of our biological diversity. Agriculture provides us with jobs, and is important for an attractive tourism industry.

Cattle

At Utsira you will find the breeds Dexter and Angus.

The cattle breed Dexter is among the smallest in the world, originates from Ireland and is well suited for smaller use with steep terrain and small barns. At Utsira, that is.

The Aberdeen Angus is a Scottish breed, developed in the 18th century. The animals are hardy, with strong urinary instincts. The animals have a high ability to utilize roughage. This makes them a good wad if you want an operation based on your own resources and grazing area. High fat marbling is central if you want a tasty, tender and juicy meat.

Wild sheep

The farmers who have wild sheep aim to enrich the cultural landscape and the environment on Utsira with a stable and well-kept breed of wild sheep to the delight of both the sheep and all visitors to the island.

The flock has a tribe of approx. 250 adult animals, which go out on the island all year round. In the summer, there can be up to 600 sheep, large and small.
