Traditional fishing

From time immemorial, people on this flat island in the middle of the ocean gap have lived by fishing. The island is in the middle of the dish, people out here have lived off and on fish for centuries. The women controlled the small farms, while the men were in the boats, as so many other places. Until fairly recently.

They have fished for herring and mackerel, saithe and mackerel sturgeon, cod and pike, they have caught shark, bream and whales, and not least lobster.

Establishment of a jetty in both Norevågen and Sørevågen were two of the first state jetty facilities in Norway, and were important in making the harbor usable and safe for the fishing fleet. With a safe harbor, the fishermen could venture out to Utsira in severe weather, and they could get shelter inside the wave. In this way, the fishermen could make better use of the fishing.

The Norwegian Fishermen's Association organizes sole fishermen, lotteries and fishing boat owners, and is thus an association both for what in other industries would be called employees and employers, as well as sole proprietorships. In Norway, all fishermen are considered self-employed, which has consequences both in terms of taxes and welfare schemes.
